A Guide for Primary Care Practices
The aim of this toolkit is to guide primary care practices through the process of planning and implementing strategies to increase service delivery of screening for urinary incontinence (UI). This toolkit provides step-by-step guidance for primary care teams to implement UI screening in practice on their path toward improved outcomes.
The toolkit is organized into five primary sections, structured around key steps for increasing UI screening:
- Prepare Your Clinic.
- Determine Screening Approach.
- Choose Your Screening Tool.
- Implement Screening.
- Sustain the Practice.
Each section contains practical guidance, screening tools and resources developed by MUI grantees, illustrative vignettes, and additional resources for further reading.

This toolkit was developed by the EvidenceNOW: Managing Urinary Incontinence (MUI) Support and Evaluation Center in partnership with subject matter experts and MUI grantee teams. The information presented in this toolkit was sourced from discussions and work with MUI grantee teams over the course of the initiative, as well as reviews of the literature and the MUI Environmental Scan (PDF, 3.2 MB).
About the Initiative
The EN:MUI initiative, established by ÂÜÀòÊÓƵin 2022, applies the successful EvidenceNOW model to address important gaps in nonsurgical urinary incontinence (UI) care for women in the primary care setting. Additional information and resources can be found in the EvidenceNOW Tools for Change repository. The repository contains evidence-based tools and resources that can help primary care practices engage in quality improvement and implement the best clinical evidence.
