Medical Training College Uses ÂÜÀòÊÓƵTool to Prepare Students for Respiratory Emergencies
Concorde Career Institute in Miramar, Florida, has incorporated AHRQ's "Cross Training Respiratory Extenders for Medical Emergencies (Project XTREME)" DVD into an educational project. Respiratory therapy students entering their second year of the Advanced-Level Respiratory Therapy Educational Program are trained in "Project XTREME" through the school's "Concorde S.A.F.E. (Student Assistance for Emergencies)" program.
David Robbins, DC, RRT, FAARC, Respiratory Therapy Program Director at the Institute, developed Concorde S.A.F.E. He says, "Being directly involved in disaster preparedness, I was extremely impressed with the contents of Project XTREME."
Upon completion of the Project XTREME Training Program, students will be eligible to sign up as volunteers to participate in the Concorde S.A.F.E. program. They then will be placed on a rotating call list to be used in the event of emergencies.
Robbins notes, "Our Program Advisory Committee liked the training I developed using Project XTREME, and they are interested in our providing volunteer backup student support in times of need."
Project XTREME is designed to train health care professionals who are not respiratory care specialists to provide basic respiratory care and ventilator management to adult patients in any mass casualty event. The Project XTREME DVD includes six training modules with interactive quizzes to test viewers' knowledge. The modules cover infection control, respiratory care terms and definitions, manual ventilation (using hand-held bags), mechanical ventilation (using the two types of ventilators included in the Federal government's Strategic National Stockpile of medicines and medical supplies for emergencies), airway maintenance, and airway suctioning.
The DVD was produced for ÂÜÀòÊÓƵby a team of respiratory care specialists at the Denver Health Medical Center led by Michael Hanley, MD.
Concorde Career Colleges, Inc., based in Mission, Kansas, offers health care and medical training programs in seven States with 15 schools, 11 of which have respiratory therapy programs.
