This report is the second comprehensive review of AHRQ’s recent investments in primary care research—this time covering fiscal years (FYs) 2023 and 2024. The report provides an overview of AHRQ’s National Center for Excellence in Primary Care Research (NCEPCR), analysis across AHRQ’s primary care research portfolio, and includes short summaries of grants and resources—organized by topic area. The purpose of this report is to showcase AHRQ’s broad and deep investments in primary care and share information that may be useful for primary care researchers and clinicians.
This report uses NCEPCR’s definition of primary care research, as outlined in the box below.

The content of this report is organized into the following sections:
- Update on AHRQ’s National Center for Excellence in Primary Care Research. This section provides an update on the activities of AHRQ’s NCEPCR in 2023 and 2024.
- Overview of AHRQ’s Recent Investments in Primary Care Research. This section shares a high-level analysis of AHRQ’s primary care research portfolio for FY 2023 and 2024, including new funding committed to grants and contracts during this period. The analysis includes information about primary care focused contracts and an overview across primary care research grants, including by grant mechanism; geographic distribution across the U.S.; organizations that received funding; and the topic areas, health conditions, and patient populations of focus across studies.
- Primary Care Grants and Resources This section provides more detailed information about AHRQ’s primary care research grants and resources, organized into nine key topic areas: Patient Safety, Practice and Quality Improvement, Healthcare Systems and Infrastructure, Health Disparities, Behavioral Health and Substance Use Disorders, Digital Healthcare, Person-Centered Care, Primary Care Workforce, and Public Health and Community Integration.
- The appendices include additional information to supplement the main body of this report:
- Appendix A: Approach and Methods describes the methods we used to develop this report, including how the content was compiled and analyzed.
- Appendix B: Grant Tables for Additional ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµ compiles lists of grants focused on the following: Children and Adolescents, Telehealth/Telemedicine, Multiple Chronic Conditions, Rural Health, Women’s Health, Older Adults, and Opioids. The grants included in these sections are already included in the topic areas covered in Section 3 of the report.
- Appendix C: Other ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµInitiatives and Resources includes information about additional ÂÜÀòÊÓÆµprograms and resources that are relevant for primary care researchers and clinicians but not included in other sections of the report.
